Woolwich attack: Ex-classmate says Michael Adebolajo was ‘changed by gang’
An ex-classmate of terror suspect Michael Adebolajo told yesterday how the “bright and funny” boy changed in his teenage years after falling in with a notorious gang.
The friend said Adebolajo was a popular pupil who loved playing football and rounders and was in the top group for English and maths.
The young Tottenham Hotspur fan invited friends round to play computer games, but was often stopped from going out by his strict parents Anthony and Tina.
He was given the nickname “Narn” after a girl at Marshalls Park School mispronounced his name as Adebanana. His friends were mostly white and Turkish.
But the schoolboy’s likeable personality disappeared when he got involved with a group of “rude boys” from Hackney, East London, the friend claimed.
He said: “He changed when he was 15 or 16 years old after meeting the gang on a bus.
“He stopped hanging round with his old friends and people were scared of him and the gang.
“I still couldn’t believe it was him, when I saw the pictures in the Mirror. He never spoke about hating anyone or religion. It wasn’t on
his radar.
“He was bright, liked football and girls and used to invite people round to his house to play Nintendo 64 and Playstation.
“He also collected Pokemon cards,” said the former friend. “He never had any trouble because he had a good sense of humour.”
“I saw him once in McDonald’s with the Hackney boys and his whole attitude towards people seemed to have changed.
